Lottie will love: walking through a real dark tunnel with a torch! The heritage trains, echoing sounds, and the sheer scale of the sandstone archway are magical for a toddler. It's short enough to hold her attention (guided tour ~20 min) and there's plenty of outdoor space to run around afterwards. Lapstone village has a pub and café for lunch. Hay St Market has transformed into a winter wonderland with a real ice skating rink, indoor snowfall, candlelit jazz, DJs, and $5 food specials. Running until August 2 so there's plenty of time. Perfect for Lottie: indoor so it's warm, ice skating with a penguin aid ($10), and the snowfall moment is magical. The $5 food specials make it affordable for a lunch stop. Combine with a Chinatown dim sum lunch (Lottie loves yum cha — watching the trolleys go by!) and a visit to Paddy's Markets for cheap toys and trinkets.
Hay St Winterfest →First time covering the Northern Beaches in the guide! The Manly Markets on Sydney Road are a weekend institution — artisan food, original art, handmade jewellery, vintage clothing, and live music. Outdoor stalls running along the main street. Lottie at 3: the live street music where she can dance, the free food samples, and the general buzz of a seaside market town. Afterwards, it's a 3-minute walk to Manly Beach — sand, waves, and the Corso for ice cream. The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is an attraction in itself (30 min, Lottie loves the boat ride). For a longer day: the Manly to Spit Bridge coastal walk starts nearby (you can just do the first 500m to Shelley Beach for a gentle walk and rock pool paddling).
Manly Markets →Now in its 24th year, EQ Markets at the Entertainment Quarter is a Saturday ritual — farm-fresh veg, still-warm sourdough, small-batch condiments, patisserie-level sweets, local fashion and art. Bring the dog, bring the kids — plenty of space, fresh air, and the Entertainment Quarter has a giant outdoor playground and a Ferris wheel. The EQ has excellent kid-friendly cafes (try Gelato Messina for a post-market treat). Combine with the COME ALIVE! Circus (if you're going) or a visit to Centennial Park for a duck-feeding walk.
EQ Markets →Mike Hewson's incredible interactive art installation is still one of the best free activities for a 3yo in Sydney. He's transformed The Tank into a surreal maze of swings, monkey bars, a real sauna, working BBQs, running water, and even a recording studio. Lottie can swing, climb, push buttons, and explore — all in a warm, safe, indoor space. It's art she can actually touch and play with. The AGNSW general galleries are also free — see the Archibald Prize 2026 (Richard Lewer's portrait of Iluwanti Ken won) on display until August 16. The gallery café has stunning harbour views and is kid-friendly. Afterward, walk through the Domain to the Royal Botanic Garden (2 min) for a picnic or play on the lawns.
AGNSW — Mike Hewson →Major international Viking exhibition now open in Sydney! The Galloway Hoard — one of the most significant Viking-age archaeological discoveries ever — featuring 90+ rare objects: gold and silver jewellery, arm rings, beads, brooches, and a detailed silver vessel. Buried around AD 900 and rediscovered in 2014. Lottie at 3: the shiny gold and silver objects are mesmerising even without context. The museum's Action Station has hands-on exhibits she can touch, and the Maritime Museum itself has great kid-friendly spaces. General admission to the rest of the museum is FREE so you can explore the ships, the submarine, and the Action Station without buying Viking exhibition tickets. Viking Exhibition →Back by popular demand! The Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience immerses you in a dreamlike underwater world where favourite virtual characters and real marine life collide. Snap a pic with Isabelle, learn from Blathers about real-world marine life, spot Gulliver washed up, and complete a stamp rally to win a postcard. Lottie at 3: the colourful fish tunnels are always a hit — lying on the moving walkway watching sharks and rays swim overhead. SEA LIFE Animal Crossing →The Rocks has embraced the winter chill with Christmas in July festivities! Highlights include the Firepit Cinema near Cadmans Cottage — outdoor screenings with crackling fire pits, twinkling lights, and festive films under the stars. The Rocks Discovery Museum is free and kid-friendly with heritage dress-ups and hands-on exhibits. The weekend food market on George St has artisan stalls and live music. Lottie at 3: the fire pits (warmth! marshmallows!), the big Christmas decorations even in July, and the cobblestone laneways to explore. The market buskers love kids who dance. Combine with a walk to Circular Quay and the Opera House for the full harbour experience.
The Rocks Christmas in July →A glowing wonderland of over 70 giant lantern sculptures! Walk an illuminated outdoor trail featuring a six-metre King Cockatoo centrepiece, family-friendly activities, food trucks, and games. Lottie will be COMPLETELY mesmerised — giant glowing animals, a towering cockatoo, and the whole illuminated trail feels like a dream. $5–$10 tickets make it one of the most affordable evening activities in Sydney. The Vineyard is in the Hawkesbury region, about 45 min drive from the city (near Windsor). Worth making an evening of it — pack dinner, arrive at dusk, and let Lottie wander the lantern trail. Combine with a drive through the Hawkesbury farmlands on the way (she'll love the horses and cows).
Lightfields — The Vineyard →Immersive behind-the-scenes experience — authentic props, original costumes, the Sorting Hat, the Forbidden Forest. For a 3yo: the Sorting Hat talking and the giant animatronic creatures are visually spectacular. The Great Hall is amazing even for non-Harry fans. Olympic Park has great family cafes (try The Brewery). Easy parking and accessible.
Harry Potter Exhibition →FINAL WEEKEND! Snow play zone, ice skating, 45m Giant Ice Toboggan, amusement rides, new interactive games, and live DJ. Worth the 90-min drive if you have a full day. Lottie can play in real snow, ride the toboggan, and meet roaming polar bear characters. This is the last chance for 2026 — the event closes Sunday 26 July.
Snow Time →Big top circus with jaw-dropping acrobatics and Greatest Showman anthems. For a 3yo: 90+ minute show, so gauge stamina. But the spectacle, music, and aerial acts are mesmerising. At EQ Moore Park.
