Perfect for Lottie: free puppet shows and bubbles are exactly her speed, she can ride, run and slide between stalls, and everything is outdoor and self-paced — stay 40 minutes or three hours. Ferry or train via Rhodes makes it an easy riverside adventure. If the crowd at the big city markets ever felt like too much, this is the calmer, kid-first version.
Wentworth Point Winter Market →The Hawkesbury's annual community festival returns — and it's the 2nd-week Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury check that actually paid off. Hawkesbury Fest celebrates everything local: free markets, live music, a giant slide, a new sports zone and a parkour course, plus local food, community stalls and entertainment across Governor Phillip Park. Around 10,000 people are expected — a big, buzzy, friendly crowd. Perfect for Lottie: a giant slide and a wide-open park to run in are a 3yo's dream, the markets mean snacks and wandering, and there's zero pressure to sit still. Windsor is about an hour from Bondi, so make it the day trip — combine with a riverside walk along the Hawkesbury and a pie in the historic town centre. Free, outdoors, and a part of Sydney the guide hasn't touched since the Lightfields lantern trail in July.
Hawkesbury Fest →Sunday is the 56th City2Surf — 90,000 runners on the 14km course from Hyde Park to Bondi, the biggest fun run on the planet. You don't run it — you go and be part of the crowd. Best spot for Lottie: Rose Bay, around 8:30–10:30am, where the course hugs the harbour — she can wave flags, high-five runners in fancy dress, and burn off energy at the Rose Bay waterfront park between waves. Heartbreak Hill (Dover Heights) is the party zone, and Bondi has the finish-line Event Village with a free adidas/rebel activation all morning. Perfect for Lottie: pure spectacle — costumes, bands, cheering crowds, zero sitting still. It's the one day a year Bondi's streets are filled with superheroes and tutus. Practical notes: roads close from 3:30am and Bondi is gridlocked — use public transport, and don't plan to drive near the course on Sunday morning.
City2Surf schedule →Inner West Libraries run "Family Tales" every weekend — lively songs, rhymes and stories for ages 0–5, and Balmain's Saturday 10:30am session is one of the best. It's a proper drop-in: arrive, sit on the mat, sing along, done in 30 minutes. Perfect for Lottie: short, interactive, and free — the exact length her attention span allows. Afterwards, Balmain is a lovely morning out: coffee on Darling Street, the waterfront playground at Mort Bay (a 5-minute walk), or a wander down to the Balmain ferry wharf. A low-key, zero-stress way to start Saturday before the Wentworth Point market.
Balmain Family Tales →The Hills District makes a return visit (last time: week 3) with one of Sydney's longest-running farmers markets — trading for close to 25 years, on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Fresh produce, gourmet food, coffee and local makers across the Showground. Perfect for Lottie: market mornings are all about grazing and running the lawns — grab fruit to snack on, watch the stallholders, and let her chase the pigeons on the Showground grass. Pair it with a Hills playground (Bella Vista Farm park or the big adventure playground at Rouse Hill) for a full morning. Also worth noting: Castle Hill is the gateway to a Balcombe Heights or Galston bushwalk if you want a nature hit after.
Castle Hill Farmers Market →Maroubra makes its guide debut — the monthly beachside market at Broadarrow Reserve, right on the sand. Food, fashion, vintage, plants and local makers, with the Pacific as the backdrop. Perfect for Lottie: a market and a beach in one — browse the stalls, then let her run the sand, hunt for shells and watch the surfers. Maroubra's famous ocean pool (Mahogany Pool-ish rock pools at the south end) and the big grassy reserve give plenty of toddler room. It's the first Saturday of the month only, so this is the one chance to catch it. Closer than Bondi, calmer, and completely new to the guide.
Maroubra Beach Markets →A second riverside market this weekend — the Ryde Wharf Market runs the 2nd and 4th Sundays on the Parramatta River at Meadowbank. Artisan stalls, street food and local producers along the waterfront park, with ferry wharf and river views. Perfect for Lottie: open grass to run on, boats and ferries to point at, and the same relaxed, wander-as-you-please rhythm as Saturday's Wentworth Point market — the two are literally across the river from each other, so if you loved Saturday you can come back Sunday. Meadowbank Park's playground is steps from the stalls. A gentler alternative to the big Hawkesbury drive if you'd rather stay closer to the river.
Ryde Wharf Market →A brand-new 200-metre pump and jump track just opened at Deepwater Park — with three zones for juniors, novices and experts. Pump tracks are the perfect first "riding" experience for a 3yo on a balance bike: no pedals needed, just push, coast and wobble with the bumps. Perfect for Lottie: the junior zone is gentle and forgiving, and the park around it has plenty of grass and shade. Bring her balance bike (or scooter) and let her find her legs — this is the kind of free, unstructured outdoor play that's gold at three. Milperra is about 35–40 min from Bondi and makes a fresh South West stop, combinable with the Castle Hill market if you're doing a Saturday circuit.
Deepwater Pump Track →The Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience at SEA LIFE wraps up on 23 August — about two weeks left. Your favourite game characters mingle with real marine life: photo spots with Isabelle, Blathers panels about real aquarium creatures, a stamp rally that earns a postcard, and cutouts of Gulliver and friends hiding around the exhibits. Perfect for Lottie: penguins, sharks and a stamp hunt in one self-paced loop — the new King penguin chick Dunkin is also on display in the Sub-Antarctic exhibit. It's indoors and warm, and you can do the highlights in under an hour and leave. Darling Harbour was in the guide in July — this is the final-chance alert for the one kids' exhibit ending soonest.
Animal Crossing x SEA LIFE →10:15am: Arrive at Balmain Library (370 Darling St) for Family Tales at 10:30am — free, 30 minutes of songs and stories, no booking → 11:15am: Coffee on Darling Street while Lottie runs the Mort Bay playground (5-min walk, harbour views, great little slide and swings) → 12pm: Head to Wentworth Point Winter Market (9am–3pm, free) — lunch from the street food stalls, then the afternoon belongs to free puppet shows, giant bubbles and kids' rides in the new Town Square, with the riverside playground as backup → 2:30pm: Home for nap. Inner West morning + Parramatta River afternoon — two brand-new guide areas in one day, both free.
Both stops FREE. Parking: Balmain Library is metered street parking; Wentworth Point has paid parking at Marina Square (or take the train to Rhodes and walk/ferry across). Everything is flat and pram-friendly.
9:30am: Leave Bondi, about an hour's drive northwest → 10am: Hawkesbury Fest at Governor Phillip Park, Windsor (free, 10am–3pm) — head straight for the giant slide and the new sports zone, then wander the markets and catch the live music → 12pm: Picnic lunch on the park lawns (or food stalls) → 1pm: Riverside walk along the Hawkesbury, then the historic Windsor town centre — old sandstone buildings, the 1819 courthouse, and an ice cream → 2:30pm: Drive home via the Hawkesbury's back roads. A proper out-of-the-city day — the guide's 2nd-week Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury check landed on a good one.
Hawkesbury Fest: FREE. Parking at Governor Phillip Park is plentiful; arrive by 10:30am to grab a good spot. Pack layers — riverside winter days are crisp.
8:30–10:30am: Park near Rose Bay and settle in along New South Head Rd where the course hugs the harbour — the elite runners pass from ~8:15am, the fancy-dress waves through the morning. Let Lottie wave, clap and high-five runners; the Rose Bay waterfront park is right there for between-wave sprints → 10:30am: Catch a bus or ferry toward Bondi to see the finish-line Event Village (free adidas/rebel activation, giveaways, live finish-line atmosphere) → 12pm: Lunch at Bondi (expect queues — it's the biggest day of the year) or head home before the crowds peak. Note: Bondi Pavilion's beach-side front is closed until the afternoon and roads are shut from 3:30am — public transport is the only sane option.
Spectating: FREE. Rose Bay has metered parking but buses are easier; trains to Bondi Junction + bus to Bondi Beach work. Take the pram and snacks — you'll be standing around in glorious chaos.
